Jesus describes His love relationship with us in many ways in the Bible. But out of all of them the most meaningful of that is engagement. The Bible says in Luke 1:26-33 that Mary was betrothed (engaged) to Joseph and that she was highly favored. God had placed her in Nazareth specifically at that time with a purpose. Her life was literally used to bring the Savior into the world! Her life is also a picture for us of how God uses us to bring Christ the Savior into the lives of a lost and dying world. Mary was highly favored, engaged, and became the balance. What do I mean by balance?

In Jesus day when a couple got engaged they would set a date and then an amount of money was pledged to be paid for the bride by the groom. The full amount of money would not be paid until the consummation of the marriage. The balance is the difference between an amount due and an amount paid. It is interesting that the meaning of consummation, other than that of the physical relationship between a man and a woman, is to complete a transaction/make perfect. Mary’s marriage to Joseph was not complete until the consummation, both literally and financially.

Spiritually this is represented in our lives when we say “I do” to Jesus Christ and accept Him as our Lord and Savior. It is then that He slips the ring onto our finger and we become engaged to Him! We are betrothed to Jesus, and then we become the balance. Jesus Christ paid the full amount for all mankind, but they have to first say “I do”. They must accept Him. For those who have not yet accepted Him, we become the balance. We become the difference.

You and I are the continuing incarnation of God incarnate! With the consummation coming at the second coming of Jesus Christ! That is when we and all those who have accepted Christ as His bride will join in the marriage supper of the lamb, adorned in white linen (Revelation 19:7-9)!

Wherever you are working or living today, in the community, as the church you are the BALANCE! Our vision at SLFG is based on 3 pillars: to balance, unify, and empower. This wonderful series “Rescue Mission” was birthed from the first pillar, balance. Thanks to all of you that have come along with us on this Rescue Mission!
