Jesus’ words from Matthews gospel rang loud in my spirit this Easter Season. Matthew 27:46 records His words vividly, penetrating my soul deeply!
“About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is to say, My God, My God, why hast though forsaken me?’
The Bible says that Jesus cried loudly to His Father asking Him why He was at that moment forsaking him. This was more intense than words can possibly portray, more than we can humanly comprehend! Jesus knew why His Father had to forsake Him, yet this separation was unbearable. This ultimate agony, anguish, and suffering was and is unparalleled.
This separation, although for a short time, and the suffering that went with it far surpassed the physical suffering He had endured from being beaten to unrecognizable and then nailed to the cross with large railroad type spikes. Can we even try to understand what this means to us today, to you and I?
Jesus Christ shed His blood for you and I so that He could receive what we deserved, and so that we could receive what He deserved. Mind blowing as it sounds, it is true!
This agony that Jesus went through during His time of separation from the Father is repeated every time you and I reject Him! Every time we refuse His miraculous offer of grace and refuse to accept His life, the gift too wonderful for words.
“Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15
In John 19:34 the Bible says “But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and forthwith came out blood and water.” After Jesus gave up HIs spirit, the Roman soldier pierced His side and out came blood and water. Blood represents His life given, water represents His life received. Jesus gave His life, yet it does us no good unless we receive it . He has given us a free will because He loves us. He will not make us do anything.
Will you receive His wonderful gift today?
